Mr Fixit and I are having a little break in Weymouth. If you’ve read my blog posts, you’re probably aware that Weymouth is one of my favourite places. We couldn’t have picked a better week – the weather is glorious which makes it even lovelier!
We arrived yesterday and have already visited Bowleaze Cove, pictured above, Weymouth main beach and had a ride on the land train from the seafront to to the harbour! We’re staying at one of the Haven sites and our caravan is fab, one of the nicest we’ve ever stayed in (we’re seasoned Haven holidayers)! It appears to be a new caravan, has a little veranda on the back and is in a brilliant location on the park.
Today we’re off to the Sea life Centre to start the day off and we plan to end it by watching the England game….not sure whatt we’ll do in the between, we’ll see what takes our fancy….. updates to follow!
The Sea Life Centre was great as always, and we enjoyed seeing the seals being fed, learning their histories and how they came to be at the centre.
As the weather was so hot, we decided a boat trip would be a good idea to cool down a little. We went down to the Coastline Cruises kiosk at the harbour and booked tickets for a 45 min trip on My Girl, which has a very interesting history. The trip took as out of the harbour and into Weymouth bay and then around the other side of Nothe Fort, before heading back toward the harbour and into the marina before mooring up. The routes vary according to the conditions, there was a Easterly wind on the day we had our trip which made the ride a little more spicy! We enjoyed it, but others on the boat were a little out of their comfort zone so the route was tailored to suit.
We followed the boat trip with fish and chips at Bennetts on the harbour whichs was delicious as always! Back at the caravan site, after a refreshing shower and little go on the 2p machines in the arcade, we watched the England game. Not the most exciting game, 0-0 draw with Ghana but enough to see England still at the top of the group after their first two matches.
A new day, and another hot one! We decided on a trip to Portland as it’s generally a bit cooler and breezy there, how wrong we were! I don’t think we’ve ever seen it so calm and still – it looked absolutely beautiful but it was swelteringly hot! We had a little stroll around and scambled down to Pulpit Rock before heading up to the High Angle Battery at the other end of the island.
Since our last visit to the batteries, there’s been a lot of restoration thanks to a National Lottery grant and funding from other organisations. It’s a very interesting, almost secret place, we wandered through the tunnels and read the history of the place on the signage that’s been added since our last visit.
We stopped off for lunch at the Cove House Inn on our way back into Weymouth. It’s in a great location, perched right at the end of Chesil Beach and the food is very good too. Whilst the main menu looks a bit limited, there is always a specials board that has a good selection as well as some interesting original dishes. I had a salad with turkey, stuffing & pigs in blankets! Sounds odd, but tasted delicious!
Once back in Weymouth, we had a round of crazy golf at the Pirate Adventure golf, I won of course!
Next day was our last day, we took a quick trip into Weymouth itself for a quick paddle in the sea, and a ride on the Weymouth Wheel, this is it’s second summer as an attraction in Weymouth. The ride consists of two slow revolutions of wheel, we enjoyed it and the views from the top on a clear, sunny day were very good.
Next up was a visit to the D-Day Museum at Castletown, Portland. Portland played a major role in the D-Day landings as it was an embarkation point of US forces and landing craft. Within the museum, there are stories of those who lived and worked in the area at the time which adds a very ‘real’ aspect. Many of the musuem exhibits are interactive – you can climb in vehicles, pick up guns, operate an anti-aircraft gun and dress up in uniforms. Definitely well worth a visit, definitely not a stuffy museum, this is somewhere that will appeal to all age groups!
On our way back to the caravan, we stopped off at Bowleaze Cove for a cold drink and a quick dip in the sea…bliss! Then a quick shower, change of clothes and off to The Gurkha for dinner. Love this place, food is great and so is the location, we weren’t disappointed and I’m so jealous of my friends who live in Weymouth and are able to eat here more often!
